The owner met us at the apartment and was SO friendly and helpful, he talked us through the map recommending loads of places including La Pepita , and then even took the time to walk us to a great restaurant nearby that was still open.

He also organised our taxi to the airport at the end of our stay and came to see us off. Absolutely agree! We stayed in Gracia last year and kept going back there for meals as it seemed like the nicest place to be. We were there during its festival in August which was fantastic! Love the vibe in Barcelona in August anyway — and love Spanish festival we actually did the Tomatina about 7 years ago in Valencia which was amazing — but scary!

The rooms are all bright, modern and functional, with cool, contemporary furniture and eye-catching details such as patterned tile floors and red brick walls.

In contrast with the commotion outside, the Hotel La Casa del Sol is a rather tranquil affair with its discreet colour palette, simple yet chic furniture and minimalist bedrooms.

The lobby and reception area have an industrial-chic feel about them with rugged brick walls and old leather sofas completing the look. The rooms are somewhat more understated with white walls and linens setting the tone, but the stylish bathroom and walk-in shower steal the show.

Two small balconies overlooked the rooftops of the neighbourhood. The apartment was well-equipped with everything we needed including good WiFI, heating, washing machine and detergent and dryer, dishwasher, iPod dock, oven, and basic kitchen supplies like washing up liquid, spices, oil, and vinegar. The main bedroom was lovely with a super comfy bed and lots of storage space. The second bedroom is smaller with a single bed.

The location is perfect on a quiet street with no traffic noise but only minutes away from bakeries, bars, restaurants, and the market. There are a few metro stations close by, but we found it easy to walk all over Barcelona. This map shows our favourite places in Gracia. Our apartment is in yellow, restaurants are red, food shopping is green, and sights are in blue a few Gaudi sights are just outside the neighbourhood. We loved experiencing local life in Gracia and the more we explored, the more we discovered to love.

The quiet streets, bohemian vibe, delicious food, and creative culture made it the perfect neighbourhood for us to stay in Barcelona. Just the tapas bars are. In general, the more you go to the north and away from the central streets and squares, the cheaper the prices get. The closer to the north of the district, the more local tapas bars which are also cheaper, while closer to the Diagonal avenue, you can find many European-style bars.

Despite their status, Barcelona and Madrid have a lot of cheap hostels. Renting a bed in one of them is cheaper than renting a room in an apartment , so you can often find some poor and unreliable people staying there. I lived in a hostel in the district it is in my list for a week, and all the people living there were from different countries. At least for a couple of months. Most of the hostels were already booked, the cheapest one was 12 euros, but with bad reviews.

It is a very cozy hostel actually, like all the other 4 , the kitchen is connected with the living room, so there are always people near you, it is easy to get to know each other.

There are not many beds in the hostel, so you live like in a big family. Living in an apartment gives you a great experience of living like a local.

You can take the metro Fontana, Lesseps, or Diagonal stops , but we walked everywhere—the Gothic Quarter was a minute walk down the grand Passeig de Gracia, and the beach at Barceloneta was 50 minutes away with lots to see along the way. Garcia is a very alternative and artsy area.

There are plenty of independent art galleries and many creative pursuits on offer. We saw classes available in psycho dance, slam dance, musical theatre, swing dance, yoga, reiki, and much more.

Italian salad with raw zucchini spaghetti at Quinoa Bar. Gracia is known for its many affordable restaurants and bars. We found the area very vegetarian-friendly. Quinoa Bar has delicious veggie burgers and creative salads, Vegetart is perfect for cheap vegan takeaway items like potato tortilla, and Les Tres a la Cuina always has meat-free options on its inexpensive lunch menu that uses seasonal ingredients.

Even the tapas bar on our corner Casa Pages had plenty of veggie options, which is not always the case in Spain. Next time we want to visit Bar Bodega Quimet which a reader recommended for its friendly local atmosphere with a good choice of vegetarian tapas.

Read more about the best vegetarian restaurants in Barcelona. Gra de Gracia is an amazing bulk-buy store where you can buy as much or little as you like of spices, nuts, seeds, rice, beans, granola, and other health food items—perfect for temporary residents like us.

It felt like there was a bakery on every corner and although all the bread was a good standard, we preferred to take a short walk to one of the best bakeries in the city, Baluard at Hotel Praktik Bakery, for excellent croissants and creative loaves. Gracia even has its own little-known Gaudi site—Casa Vicens, which is the first house he designed.

We much prefer renting apartments to staying in hotels, and Gracia has some fantastic options that are more affordable than in the centre. We rented a two-bedroom apartment from Waytostay, but you can also check out Airbnb.

Our Gracia apartment, Torres Rojo, was spacious, bright, stylish, and modern with wooden floors and white walls decorated with artwork. Two small balconies overlooked the rooftops of the neighbourhood. Look no further! The Osprey Farpoint 70 Travel Backpack is perfect for big trips. Forget about the overpriced, underwhelming establishments found in the touristy areas peddling their insipid paellas and unpalatable, generic fast food.

The eateries in Gracia Barcelona are overwhelmingly independent and cater to a local market rather than the tourist dollar. But its food scene is also extremely diverse meaning you can feast on cuisines with influences from all over the globe. There are tapas bars, pintxos joints, hole in the wall pizza outlets, Syrian kebab hawkers, and everything in between.

While there are some high end restaurants, almost everything in Gracia is reasonably priced. Want to know our favourite places to dine in Gracia Barcelona? Check out this guide on which restaurants not to miss. Aperitifs are big news here so be sure to take one before your evening meal. Gracia Barcelona is famous for having some of the most picturesque squares in the city.

Groups of friends sit and enjoy their lunch in them. Families take their kids to the squares to run around, ride skateboards or for a spin on their bikes. And come the evening they turn into huge, open air bars with performers putting on shows and playing live music.

The stunning Placa del Sol is the most popular and well used square in Gracia Barcelona. However, most people just buy a beer from the surrounding shops and take a seat on the floor.

Placa Virreina is overlooked by the beautiful Sant Joan church on one side, with cafe bars running along its sides. This is more of a daytime hangout where people go for a coffee or glass of wine.

The steps of the church are prime seating here providing a wonderful vantagepoint to watch the world go by from. Placa de la Vila de Gracia has a beautiful old clocktower at its heart that rises above the surrounding restaurants.

There are also plenty of other smaller squares like Raspall, and Place del Diamant which have their own individual charms. However, we did witness a number of other fantastic street festivals in Gracia. There was the wild all night parties of the festival of Sant Joan.

There were wine festivals, food festivals, religious festivals, and more. Perhaps you want a relaxing date evening with your other half. Gracia Barcelona is home to the awesome Cine Verdi which screens a wide variety of movies in their original languages. Refreshingly, for a cinema the snacks are cheap as well! So you can scoff away at a box of popcorn without putting a hole in your wallet.

There are a disproportionately high number of art galleries in Gracia Barcelona. In fact many of the streets resemble outdoor galleries as well thanks to the brilliant street art on display. A travel adaptor that works anywhere in the world? Where would people recommend and also any specific hotel. We would pay up to euros a night. Passeig de Gracia is nice.

Rambla de Catalunya is nicer, imho. For a more Gothic yet trendy ambiance, consider El Born. Keep in mind though that this is a very personal response, other members will surely recommend different things and probably equally good or better!

In all, in your case you perhaps might want to have a look at El Born. El Born is lumped into Barri Gotic the Gothic quarter. Unless you want 5 star luxury hotels like the W, the Arts, Mandarin Oriental etc , you may be able to pay a lot less and still be satisfied.

Without knowing your exact dates or style preference, I suggest:. Hotel Barcelona Catedral. Ohla Hotel. Grand Hotel Central.

Actually I was looking on my own and that area looked more interesting than the two areas that my friend and travel agent. I would say it looks like Old Montreal rather than staying near St Catherine street. Would you agree. We stayed in the Passeig de Gracia area and were very happy.

We would stay there again over Las Ramblas. Quieter and nicer does not mean so quiet that there is nothing going on.
