Review your personal auto-insurance documents or call your insurance agency and ask whether your coverage extends to rentals in Spain. Do the same for. Do I need a rental car while in Barcelona or Madrid. 3 years ago. Save. My family of 4 - hubby, 12 year old and 8 year old, and I, are planning a trip to Spain in. Driving around Spain can be a bit of a challenge, from renting the right car to knowing Before you go online to book your vehicle in cities like Barcelona, Madrid, or Seville, This car rental tip could be applied to many aspects of your trip.

Regina W Bryan. Getting wheels is worth the effort it takes. Related: Calculating the real cost of renting a car in Europe. Here are my top tips, many of which are applicable to renting a car throughout Europe.

Always check with the rental car agency beforehand to make sure you have the right documents for driving on Spanish roads. A typical rental car in Spain. Photo: Holly H. I have rented from many different companies in Spain and have had a range of good and bad experiences. The main takeaway is that if it looks too good or too cheap to be true, then it probably is. Like the cheapo airlines that will nickel and dime you for every pound of luggage and every inch of legroom, many cheapo rental car companies will hit your wallet for gas, mileage, insurance, and additional drivers.

I have ended up spending much more than I expected to at super budget companies. In the end, I stopped using them and decided to pay more in advance for a better product and less hassle.

Be confident at the counter to get the best service and price. Photo: Adam L. This car rental tip could be applied to many aspects of your trip. Make sure you know all of the extra charges including unfilled tank charges! Be assertive and ask now.

At the rental counter, they usually give you a piece of paper that includes a small illustration of a car. Insist that someone go with you or meet you in the garage to go over any flaws that the car has on the interior and exterior. Mark all these flaws, even the small ones, on the documents that you got at the rental counter, carefully marking the dents and scratches on the diagram of the car.

This may sound excessive, but being thorough could save you a lot of money. Photo: BJK. These circular intersections have replaced many crossroads and four-way stops in Spain.

Some roundabouts consist of four lanes and can be daunting to merge into and out of. Otherwise, gracefully enter and wind around to your desired exit. Not sure which turn off to take? Just keep circling the roundabout until you find the right road! Use a traffic-free toll road, like this one in Torrevieja, if you want to save time. Photo: Mike S.

In Catalonia many of the highways are toll roads, and many of them are not cheap. Tunnels also usually collect a hefty toll. Depending on how far you have to go and how much time you have, it may be better to suck it up and pay for the toll roads. Most toll booths will accept both credit cards and cash. Photo: Barry H. Always lock your doors, and do not leave your suitcase, purse, camera bag, or anything else of value in plain sight in your parked rental car.

Put everything that could be tempting to an unsavory character out of sight in the trunk. This is especially important in big cities like Barcelona and Madrid, but applies to smaller towns as well. Photo: LenDog Most rental cars in Spain and throughout Europe are equipped with manual transmission, and most Spaniards know how to drive a stick shift car.

Automatic cars are the exception, not the rule, and you may have to pay hundreds of euros more to rent one. If you really want to rent an automatic, then look around and compare prices.

Make sure to reserve an automatic far in advance, because many companies have a limited supply, especially in the high season when Americans come in droves. Be very careful where you park. Fines can be huge in Spanish cities. Photo: Rob Baird. It is not easy to park in Barcelona or Madrid. View all hotels. Top questions about Madrid. Pros: Drop off was easy. Pros: nothing. And we had to wait in the office for more than an hour and there was no point from booking the car online cuz we already waited an hour!

We would like to refund our money. Pros: The had a car for me. Not the car that I had reserved, but it was a car. Cons: Everything. We had to return our rental 12 days earlier than we had planned due to Trump's shutting down flights from Europe to the US. I have sent emails to their office requesting a credit. They have not responded. I will now dispute the charges with my CC company.

Given what they did on return, I'm glad I didn't fill it up. Enterprise Rent-a-car. Pros: Easy drop off. Cons: The excess in the case of an accident was up to the whole value of the car! Usually on third party websites, it is around euros. We had to pay 50 euros extra per day for the CDW. I should have known there is something hidden in the price shown on your website. Last time renting with you. Cons: They did not have car I reserved. My flight was delayed 2 hours and they did nothing to help assist in finding me a new car.

I ended up having to use a different company at 2x the cost. Pros: Very friendly and cooperative staff. Cons: The car had a defective tyre that should have been checked before handing the car.

Cons: More transparence in the insurence costs. Airport Madrid Adolfo Suarez T4. Avenida Del Partenon, Puerta Atocha Llegadas Ave. San Leonardo 8. T1 Closed, Go To T4. Trespaderne, It wasn't quite what I ordered. Pros: Picking up the car was ok, and the service as well, aside from the fact I mentioned for ordering from an external website.

Cons: Apparently, when you order from Kayak or other sites, it doesn't include any insurance. So they had to cancel the order and make a whole new one, which was about 65 Euros more! Also, the car had many dents and scratches, and when we returned it they said we caused some of the scratches on one of the wheel plates! They really annoyed us with this. Terrible experience. Cons: The car was offered with a ficticus lower price, dirty a, with smoke smell and with a Maxycosy chair for my 7 months baby that was broken!

Indeed I had to put a complaint and will never use europcar! Ford skod in madrid. Cons: Findibg the car at the lot was hard. There are multiple zones with same set of parking spot number. Took us a half hour to find our car. Staff only mentioned parking spit number - did not say anything about zones. Also the car had tires with low pressure. Good rental, small hickups. Pros: Helpful people on car pickup, good offers for upgrade, etc.

Also the car had tires with low pressure. Good rental, small hickups. Pros: Helpful people on car pickup, good offers for upgrade, etc.

Cons: Getting the car out of the parking lot was hard it was Van. And certain things in the car were not ok: 12V power outlet, broken and Fuel Additive almost depleted and we were not told about them. Pros: Airport pick up drop off very smooth and easy. Cons: GPS provided only worked in Spain where we were 5 days the other 13 days in Portugal it didn't work Rated Aeropuerto de Barajas Terminal 1. Ugly car hidden fees. Pros: When I bought this offer at Kayak it was after the credit card purchase where a special message appears saying extra fees may apply.

I ask for small economy car that's it. First catch, I was charge with full tank service. I thought ok it's nice. But when I returned the car they charge me for another managing fee. Most expensive gass ever! Then I paid for full insurance and because the car. Finally they took euros from my credit card as deposit. In summary they own me euros that I haven't received yet one week after service. C Fresa Local 19 Planta Baja. Wrong adress.

Cons: It doesn't specify the rental is inside the building behind the train station. Google Takes you across to some other streets. Very vague location. Also when you get inside there's no Dollar sign. Only after I called I realized it's inside the Hertz office. There you can see 2 tiny Dollar signs.

Don't be more than 2 hours late. Cons: They will look at your car with magnifying glasses when returning the car. So report every dent and scratch no mater how small is it when picking the car. I didn't even think cars even has one in modern times. Madrid Barajas airport. All Dickmanns reviews.

Recent reviews All reviews Positive Neutral Negative 2. Calle de Tortosa, Cons: They didnt tell me that the car company is "goldcar", no body know what or who is Ace company in airport. Ace company rent from another car companies cars- they never mantion that!

And also they didnt tell me that i supposed to go to Gold car or something familear and they didnt answer me when i was calling.

The car i ordered was talken by other customer and i paid 60 Earo extra!!! Pros: Car was clean and agent was helpful and the car was clean and well prepared. There was no description of the rental office location in reservation. Be very careful with this company and understand w. Pros: By far the lowest price I could find. The car was fine except for the fact that the low tire pressure light was on when I picked it up. Cons: Published rate is great but it does not include any insurance.

When picking the car they tell you that you will need to pay a large sum as deposit 1, euros in my case if you do not get insurance which is offered at about the same as the basic rate, doubling the cost. Also, service is limited if you do not get it, you are on your own if you have a problem with the car outside of regular business hours. Ace does not exist as a brand in Spain, they operate as GoldCar. It took me 30 minutes at the airport to figure this out. Low tire pressure light was on when I picked it up.

The person that gave me the car said that most likely the light had not been reset by the maintenance people, but later I confirmed that the pressure on one of the tires was really low so I had to pump it up. Not impressed Many hidden fees. Pros: Overall the rental process was smooth and the car decent. There were also several small fees that were not included in the original quote. So, I had to rent elsewhere. I am still not sure it even exists there!

It is a terrible way to arrive in a country and find out my reservation was on another country ending doing a diffrent reservation with a diffrent company. Cons: Long story short got charged for damage that was not there. I believe with all my heart they charged me a damage fee cause they know my american credit card will pay for it and they are right no deductible too Scam!!!! Pros: Probably my fault for not reading the fine print and booking a non refundable rental.

Cons: I purchased insurance when I booked. When I got there they told me if I didn't purchase an additional 67 euro of insurance id need to leave aeuro liability deposit as well as euro deposit for fuel which would be locked out of my account for 30 days. I don't have that kind of money and didn't want to create overdraft fees, and wasn't willing to spend the extra 67 as I was renting the car for less then a day.

Long story short I realized it was better to cut my losses with the 30something euros I'd already spent and just walk away. I'd never be willing to let over euro potentially provide liability for other ace customers for over a month for a days rental. Pros: Front desk staff was good and helpful. Pickup and drop off staff was indifferent, almost rude. Cons: Prices are fake and rules for being late not visible anywhere. I ended up paying 4 times the original price because I got there 2 hours late and they claimed my reservation expired.

No email related to the reservation mentioned anything about that. I was expecting some extra charges for the usual insurance things that these companies make you pay, but I paid more than that. I'd never rent a car using kayak or this specific company again. Terminal 1, Av. De La Hispanidad. The people at the stand is not really helpfull and they are trying to charge you full price for any reason. Cons: The service at the stand desk. The outskirts of Madrid are filled with countrysides rich in lakes, romantic wineries, towering mountains, and historically significant buildings such as El Escorial, former residence of the King of Spain.

There are two car rental locations within the airport, in Terminal 1 and Terminal 4. Large rental companies such as Avis, Enterprise, Europcar, and Sixt have counters at both terminals; however, it is best that, once you assess your rental options on KAYAK, you confirm the best pickup location with your chosen company. Once you have your rental car it will only take you approximately 40 minutes to drive to the center of Madrid; the M14 and M40 bypass roads are the best routes to take.

Especially around the congested city center, Madrid drivers have a tendency for taking any advantage on the road possible and will squeeze into small gaps. Be wary of this and continually check the cars around you, as conditions can change very quickly. Please keep in mind that it can take a few weeks to receive your license in the mail following application, so it is best to organize this with ample time left before your travels.

But don't assume that renting a car in Spain is the same as at home -- the Spanish government does not recognize American driver's licenses. Acquire an international driver's license, through a permit service or an auto organization such as AAA, before traveling to Spain.

While a car-rental agency may rent to you based on your American driver's license, under Spanish law American licenses are not valid, and an international driver's license is required. If you are caught driving a car without a valid license, the car will be confiscated. Review your personal auto-insurance documents or call your insurance agency and ask whether your coverage extends to rentals in Spain. Do the same for your credit cards, as credit-card companies often insure cars rented with their cards.

Don't assume that a stated "international" policy is good enough -- ask about Spain specifically to avoid any loophole or miscommunication. Reserve your car in advance, either with an international chain such as Hertz or through a local agency like Pepecar see Resources. This is the only way to ensure that the specific car you want is available when you want it. Also, some agencies, such as Avis, offer discounts if you reserve far enough in advance.
